Purple Loosestrife

Dear Wall Lake Residents,

It has been shared with the Wall Lake Association Board of Directors that there are some purple loosestrife plants around the lake. The plants are usually found in soft, moist and sometimes “mucky” soil. It also flourishes along shorelines. It is known as an Invasive Species, not native to Indiana.

Purple loosestrife negatively affects both wildlife and agriculture. It displaces and replaces native flora and fauna, eliminating food, nesting and shelter for wildlife. Purple loosestrife forms a single-species stand that no bird, mammal, or fish depends upon, and germinates faster than many native wetland species.

The plants may look nice and are pretty while they are not good for other native flowers and plant species and wildlife.

The best way to eradicate the species from our lake is for each property owner to PULL the plant(s) from the soil while trying to bring the root structure up with the pulling. Rod Edgall from the Indiana DNR shared, “If possible I would recommend pulling it, this can be the most efficient way to get rid of it.”  If the soil is soft or mucky, the pulling should be fairly easy. Please dispose of the plants by placing in a plastic bag and disposing in the trash. If each owner maintains their shoreline, the task can be easily and quickly done. If you see it on your property but cannot remove it, please let a Board member know and we will work to get a volunteer to remove it. We need your help to maintain our lake and shorelines.

Please help,

Wall Lake Association
